tremendous impact on our everyday life as well as on science and technology.
Applications for optical phenomena range from lighting and contact lens
technology to laser cutting and welding, telecommunication and data processing,
laser surgery and medical physics, optical microscopy, laser tweezers, DNA sequencing, and of
course, fundamental research and spectroscopy. The pace at which optical methods
have been established in the past few decades is quite remarkable, and there are
clear indications that optical techniques will gain more weight in the near
